Tasked with creating a brand identity for the hypothetical 2020 Okinawa Olympics, I wanted to focus on Okinawa’s unique natural landscape and welcoming atmosphere to highlight it’s difference from common associations with mainland Japan. Okinawa’s long history as an independent island nation has developed to become a singular culture characterized by warm and friendly faces, bright and vibrant colors and traditional art forms.
The main logo for the Olympics was designed to evoke the connected community and relaxed island spirit of Okinawa. Continuing on those values, the event icons, "pictograms," were hand-painted using traditional ink brushes, echoing the dynamic but organic logo. I implemented the logo and pictograms using three applications : tickets, daily schedules and event calendars. Using a grid system I created for each of the applications, each event was assigned a respective color to be used in the applications. The daily schedules and event calendars are designed to be printed in a booklet that would be handed out to the Olympics attendees upon arrival at the grounds.
